Jo has a background in design, worked as a jeweller for a number of years and in film animation, before becoming a design technology teacher. During this time she developed an interest in the ways computers can support more inclusive learning environments and can help pupils to become more confident and effective learners.
She worked for Hounslow on ways to promote inclusion supported by ICT. This interest formed the basis of research for a doctorate. Jo became the Hounslow adviser for E-Learning in 2005 and worked closely with teachers to integrate thinking skills across the curriculum within media rich learning environments.
In addition she worked on the development of flexible learning spaces, which meet teaching and learning needs that are enquiry based, mobile, and adaptable, in order to support formal, informal, virtual and non-virtual learning. She believes E-learning must take account of how we think and how we learn in order to exploit new technology to the full.
Jo has recently completed a number of research projects that indicate that disaffected young people can become motivated and can gain confidence through projects involving ICT. Evidence demonstrated that limited language and literacy skills can be supported effectively within a computer gaming environment. These successes have informed the Hounslow borough wide ‘Hold on to Sports’ computer gaming event inspired by the 2012 Olympics.
Jo works for the Open University as an associate lecturer for a masters level course on E-learning and a second level design course.
